Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival

GIVING ARTISTS THE SIDEWALK SPACE THEY DESERVE

Before the mid 80s, the narrow ribbon of conch shell grounded concrete that winds its way along one of Belize’s most beautiful beaches, was the only way to deliver goods to fishing folk and their families living in Placencia Village. The wheelbarrow or two that fetched essentials from arriving boats at the harbour may be serving different purposes today, but they share the same picturesque route with strolling and frolicking feet belonging to children, lovers, friends (and frenemies), as well as the four-legged critters.

Sixteen years ago, a group of talented artists who formed the Placencia Peninsula Arts Association (PPAA) discovered how to make this charming walkway explode with colour while highlighting local talents, and every February that vision continues to be realized.

Thanks to the efforts of the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association who have been organizing the annual Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival since the PPAA disbanded, as well as generous sponsors, the event has grown to see a diverse group of artists representing the entire country of Belize.

ALWAYS EXPLORING NEW IDEAS AND ARTISTRY

True to the good-natured spirit of the Belizean people, these artisans of varied cultures offering a cornucopia of sensorial pleasures share the friendliest and most authentic of welcoming smiles to their stalls that line both sides of the sidewalk. There are no pretentious or pushy vibes here, and visitors were able to find that among the dilettante and the pros.

Whether it’s a nourishing soap that was crafted with organic cohune oil from Belize’s rainforest, a striking painting that perfectly captures our vibrant marine life, a masterful bowl carved from Belize’s prized multi-colored zericote wood, a tiny yet so intricately designed piece of conch shell jewellery or a Maya jipijapa basket that speaks to your soul, each piece came with a story that visitors can hear straight from the maker’s mouth.

And any party in Placencia would not be complete without delicious food, drink and entertainment. This festival allows visitors to enjoy refreshments while shopping for their favourite pieces to the soundtrack of live cultural rhythms and the local DJ’s popular sets. Children have a blast too thanks to expert face painting and attractions like trampolines and beach bounce houses.

This marvellously interactive two-day affair is bound to leave an indelible mark on the heart of any art and culture enthusiast. The festival is souvenir shopping at a more empyrean level in Belize, and one you’ll want to revisit again and again. If you come, don’t forget to grab an official Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival t-shirt, the official fundraiser for the festival organizers.
