Garifuna Settlement Day

A CULTURE CONTINUES TO THRIVE

The Garifuna people are a unique and special contribution to Belizean society. With a strong focus on storytelling, drumming, dancing, and preserving traditional livelihoods like fishing and farming, the Garifuna culture adds a deep dimension to our way of cooking, music, and heritage.

On November 19, the entire country celebrates the arrival of the Garifuna people to the shores of Belize nearly 200 years ago. With exhibitions of traditional music and dance, local food such as cassava bread and hudut, and recreations of the boat arrival, you are sure to enjoy learning about this culture that has survived until modern-day.
